Medieval women occupied a number of different social roles. Women in the Middle Ages, around the 5th to the 15th century, held the position of wife, mother, peasant, artisan, and nun.
476 a.d. - 1000 A.D.
Women had fewer rights than men, for example, they had to obey the wishes of their fathers or husbands. To gain power, however, women had to go to the Christian Church, the most powerful of institutions.
1000 a.d. - 1300 a.d.
Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women during the High Middle Ages. Female artisans in some people were organised in guilds.
